MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — Keith Griffin, a 48-year-old man from Jensen Beach, Florida, was arrested this past August at his home by the Martin County Sheriff’s Department and charged with 10 felony counts of possession of child pornography. Sadly enough, arrests like this happen almost every day. But what makes this particular arrest newsworthy and stand out from the crowd is who the arrestee claims is actually responsible for the downloading of the illicit pictures found on his computer. A hormonal teenage son or daughter perhaps? No. Grandma? No. Santa Claus? No, but getting warmer. Mr. Griffin pointed the finger squarely at his CAT!! In a tall tale fabricated in order to escape punishment and arrest, Mr. Griffin told an elaborate story about how his cat had a habit of jumping up on the computer’s keyboard when he was away from it and when he would return all kinds of funny things were on his computer screen. Mr. Griffin would have everyone believe that this happened over 1,000 times (the number of illicit pictures found on his computer). Even at twice a day, it would take the cat 1.3 years to accumulate the number of pictures found in Mr. Griffin’s possession.
Just last week, the Martin County Sheriff’s Department added 60 more felony counts to the charges and some media outlets are reporting of still another 20 counts being added, bringing the total number to around 90 felony counts, each carrying a prison term of 5 years and/or $5,000 fine. If convicted on all counts, Mr. Griffin is potentially facing 450 years in prison and/or a $450,000 fine.
Currently, Griffin is being held in lieu of $2.2 million bail. A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department said the cat is being cared for by a family friend during Mr. Griffin’s incarceration.
It’s not known if the cat intends on suing Griffin for defamation of character.
